The Legends League Cricket 2024 final, played on October 16 at Bakshi Stadium, Srinagar, treated cricket fans to an exhilarating encounter between Southern Super Stars (SNSS) and Konark Suryas Odisha (KNSO). In a dramatic finale that ended in a tied match, Southern Super Stars claimed victory after a tense Super Over, marking an unforgettable conclusion to this season.
After losing the toss, Southern Super Stars were put into bat by Konark Suryas Odisha. They suffered an early blow when opener Shreevats Goswami was dismissed for a duck on the fourth ball of the match by Diwesh Pathania. However, Martin Guptill (27 off 25) and Hamilton Masakadza (83 off 58) rebuilt the innings with a solid partnership.
Masakadza, the Player of the Match, was the standout performer with a swashbuckling 83, hitting 8 fours and 5 sixes at a strike rate of 143.10. He showcased his power-hitting and composure to anchor the innings, even as wickets fell at the other end. Pawan Negi (33 off 24) also played a crucial role, helping SNSS reach a competitive total of 164/6 in their allotted 20 overs.
Chasing 165 to win, Konark Suryas Odisha started their innings shakily, losing wickets at regular intervals. Richard Levi (16 off 11) and Kevin O'Brien (17 off 24) failed to provide stability at the top. The middle order also struggled against disciplined bowling from the Super Stars.
The most notable performance came from Yusuf Pathan, who nearly stole the game with a blistering 53 off 36 balls. His innings, which included 6 boundaries and 2 sixes, brought KNSO back into contention. However, he was run out on the last ball of the 20th over, with the score level at 164, sending the match into a Super Over.
The game’s tension peaked as both teams headed into the Super Over. Batting first in the Super Over, Southern Super Stars managed to post a total of 15 runs, thanks to a quick cameo from Masakadza.
Konark Suryas Odisha, chasing 16 to win, were unable to get over the line as the disciplined bowling from Hamid Hassan restricted them to just 11 runs. The Southern Super Stars emerged victorious, claiming the Legends League Cricket 2024 title.
The Legends League Cricket 2024 final was a perfect blend of excitement, drama, and skill, showcasing the enduring brilliance of cricketing legends. Southern Super Stars’ triumph in the Super Over added to the thrill, as both teams gave it their all in a closely contested match.
Hamilton Masakadza’s all-round brilliance, Yusuf Pathan’s aggressive knock, and the thrilling Super Over finish made this final one for the ages.
With Southern Super Stars lifting the trophy, the Legends League once again lived up to its name, bringing former cricket greats back to the forefront in style.
